Accidents can be devastating and traumatizing. When you don’t have the appropriate insurance it can even be worse.
A year ago I was involved in an accident. My sister was seriously injured and two persons in the other vehicle were also injured. I got lucky; I escaped without a single injury.
Whilst my family had to deal with my sister’s severe injuries, the uncertainty whether she would survive, I also had to deal with the financial consequences of the accident.
My car was a wreck and I had to rely on my family and friends for means of transportations.
The police investigation concluded that I was responsible for the accident. I was not sure how to deal with it. I was overwhelmed.
My first thought was that I could lose everything because I simply did not have the money to cover all the expensive. I could not even replace my own car. How would I ever be able to replace the other car? At that stage I did not even consider that I might be held responsible for the cost of the medical care of my cousin and the two injured passengers of the other car.
I sought advice from a lawyer. I had to because it came to light that my insurance coverage was just about sufficient to cover the medical expenses of two persons, and one vehicle. I took out the state minimum car insurance. That would mean that one person could most probably sue me for medical costs.
My sister recovered and assured me that suing me for her medical cost was not even an option. The insurance replaced the other car, and also covered the medical expenses of the other two injured person.
It was a costly and traumatizing lesson for me. I immediately increased my insurance coverage after I bought my new car; my insurance is now fairly above the above the “state required” coverage.
